NEWS AND EVENTS IN VIHA REGION

Cities for Seniors

The world's population is aging, and our cities aren't keeping up. Inadequate signage, inaccessible transportation and unaffordable housing are among the challenges seniors face as they try to stay active in their communities. But if you live in Saanich help is on the way.  The research was led by Dr. Elaine Gallagher, director of the University of Victoria's Centre on Aging, which partnered with Saanich and the BC Ministry of Health on the project. See PDF

Dr. Elaine Gallagher, BCNAR co-leader from UVic wins community leadership award.

On September 29th Dr. Holly Tuokko presented a workshop about Screening for Cognitive Impairment. Her Powerpoint slides are available here.

BC Ministry of Health Policy Rounds

The role of the Strategic Policy and Research Knowledge (SPARK) Branch is to manage and support the development, implementation, coordination and review of Ministry-wide projects and policy initiatives, in consultation with other divisions, ministries and relevant stakeholders.

Policy Rounds are forums where all levels of staff, from all areas of the Ministry, can find out more about a broad range of policy research topics.

The objectives of Policy Rounds are:
i) to raise the level of awareness of current health policy research;
ii) to promote the use of evidence based decision-making;
iii) to develop networks (common areas of understanding) among areas of the Ministry, other ministries, academic community and key sectors;
iv) to support ‘ongoing education’ as an aspect of our corporate culture; and
v) to focus attention and increase knowledge related to specific issues.

Information and criteria to present at Policy Rounds: PDF

World Health Organization Elder Friendly Cities Project

Saanich was placed on the international stage as BC’s partner city for the World Health Organization Age Friendly Cities Project.  Saanich has shown leadership through multiple efforts to create a senior friendly and active aging community. One outcome will be the creation of an “Age-Friendly City Index.” The results of the project were unveiled worldwide on October 1, International Day of Older Persons, 2007. Dr. Elaine Gallagher is the PI for the research component of the project in Saanich, and Holly Tuokko and Denise Cloutier- Fisher are co-investigators. The report is available at http://www.cserv.gov.bc.ca/seniors/news.htm
